In order to allow all students to demonstrate their abilities, exams should include a variety of types of questions. Instead, it should be viewed as an investment. It might be helpful to place tests at the end of important learning units rather than simply give a midterm halfway through the semester. An article words or less details how a teacher can use a book or set of books to teach a K-6 social studies lesson or series of lessons. Refer to the Sample Lesson Plan for New Teachers for a model of how you can structure each individual lesson.

Tests should be designed with primary course objectives in mind and should cover material from all components of a course sections, lectures, textbooks, etc. Since some students may have access to old exams, it is probably fairer to give all students sample copies of at least one previous exam. This allows students to seek help, and instructors to address areas that may need more attention, thus enabling student progression and improvement. Review all materials gathered for each concept and list those you actually plan to use. Poorly written questions and typos are discouraging to students, who trust that you have put careful thought and attention into how they are being evaluated. What material if any am I allowed to bring into the exam room?

Font: point, Times New Roman Length: 3, words maximum, not including notes, references, or tables. If you use completion questions, be willing to accept reasonable alternative answers that you had not considered prior to giving the exam. Someone else can often point out ambiguities and typos that you do not see. This allows students to seek help, and instructors to address areas that may need more attention, thus enabling student progression and improvement.
